Folk Music and Dances of Rajasthan

Rajasthan is one of the historic places in India that dotted with old forts and palaces and where monkeys and camels still dominate the streets. Its a country which fascinates the truly sense of India culture and traditions. The colorful saris worn by the women, the twangy sounds of the sitar, and the exotic scents of foreign spice add to the color to its traditions. Rajasthan is culturally rich and has artistic and cultural traditions which reflect the ancient Indian way of life. The Rajasthanies flock culture of the villages, depicts the highly symbolic of the state. Rajasthan is also popular for its highly cultured traditional classical music and dance with its own distinct part of style. The music is uncomplicated and songs depict day-to-day relationships and chores, more often focused around fetching water from wells or ponds.

 

The Ghoomar dance from Udaipur and Kalbeliya dance of Jaisalmer have gained international recognition. Folk music is a vital part of Rajasthan culture. Kathputali, Bhopa, Chang, Teratali, Ghindar, Kachchhighori, Tejaji etc. are the examples of the traditional Rajasthani culture. Folk songs are most commonly ballads which relates heroic deeds and love stories; and religious or devotional songs known as Bhajans and Banis (often accompanied by musicals instruments like dholak, sitar, sarangi etc.) are also sung.

 

Rajasthan is known for its traditional, colorful art. The block prints, Bagaru prints, Sanganer prints, tie and dye prints, and Zari embroidery are major export products from Rajasthan. Handicraft items like wooden furniture and handicrafts, carpets, and blue pottery are some of the things commonly found here. Rjasthan is also known as shpping paradise where we can find beautiful goods at a low price rate. A Rajasthani traditional dress for females comprises an ankle length skirt and a short top, also known as a “lehenga” or a “chaniya choli”.

 

The main religious festivals are Deepawali, Holi, Gangaur, Teej, Gogaji, Shri Devnarayan Jayanti, Makar Sankranti and Janmashtami, as the main religion is Hinduism. Rajasthan’s desert festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm spirit among the people. This festival is being held once in a year at winter. During this festival people dressed in brilliantly hued costumes, the people of the desert dance and sing haunting ballads of valor, romance and tragedy. There are also fairs with snakes charmers, puppeteers, acrobats and flock performers. Camels, of course plays a vital role in this festival.

 

Rajasthan Dances are as splendid as its music. There is community dance called Ghoomar which is performed by the women of all ages. It is also a ritual dance for the brides, a sort of a welcoming dance to the bride who will be part of her husband’s home. The dance is performed through the whole night. Fire dance is also performed during religious celebrations on winter night showcase the Rajasthan very strong faith to their gods. The dancers oftentimes perform on the flaming coals as a tribute to their rituals gods. Another interesting dance of this city is “Kachi Ghoodi” where the men and women of the villages wear costumes that resemble horses. They pretend to be soldiers are horsed bandits. Its a part of a therotic dance was been performed by the professional dancers who practices this kind of dancing every year. The performers carry mock swords and play the party of bandits of the shekhawati, a Rajasthan. They are Rajasthan own version Robinhood stealing from rich and proving for the poor.

 

The folk and the music dance in this part of India make ita all more interesting for the tourists or people who want to experience a splendid culture.
